Zhuge Liang (181-234 AD), also known as Kongming, was a renowned strategist, statesman, inventor, and diplomat during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. He is a prominent figure in numerous movies and TV series adapted from the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Born in Yangdu County, Shandong, Zhuge Liang rose to prominence after becoming the chancellor and strategist of Liu Bei, a warlord who sought to restore the Han Dynasty. He is often depicted as a brilliant tactician, credited with many key victories for Liu Bei's Shu Han state. He played a crucial role in forming the alliance between Liu Bei and Sun Quan against Cao Cao at the Battle of Red Cliffs.
After Liu Bei's death, Zhuge Liang served as regent for Liu Bei's son, Liu Shan, dedicating himself to the northern expeditions against the rival state of Cao Wei. Despite his efforts, these campaigns ultimately proved unsuccessful. He died during the Battle of Wuzhang Plains, attributed to exhaustion and illness.
Zhuge Liang is remembered as a paragon of intelligence and loyalty, often portrayed as a wise and selfless advisor. His legacy continues to resonate in Chinese culture, and his name is synonymous with strategic brilliance.
